From Watch Collector to Leather Craftsman: The Story Behind Khisa
My love for watches didn’t start with collecting—it started with chasing. You could call me more of a watch hunter than just a watch enthusiast. I was always on the lookout for timepieces that had something to say—whether through their design, their history, or just the way they felt on the wrist.
Thanks to my job, I got to travel a lot, and naturally, my collection started growing. Each watch I picked up had a story of its own. Mostly were vintage, some modern, but all of them held a bit of emotional value for me.
But with the excitement of collecting came a not-so-exciting problem: the leather straps. Over time, many of them started to crack, peel, or completely fall apart—even though the watches themselves were in perfect shape. And with my growing collection, this problem only got worse.
You can even spot it in this photo of me with part of my collection—the strap issue was very real and hard to ignore.
Often, when I pulled out a watch to wear, I would notice the strap had deteriorated, even though it proudly carried the “Genuine Leather” stamp. That disappointment became a familiar feeling. I realised I wasn’t alone—many fellow collectors were facing the same issue.
The Turning Point: Searching for Quality
Determined to fix the problem, I began researching materials, construction techniques, and tanning processes. That deep dive led to a breakthrough: the solution was to stop relying on mass-produced “genuine leather” and start using full grain leather—the highest quality, most durable leather available.
And that’s how in 2021 Khisa was born.
Our straps are crafted using top grain leather, saffiano leather or suede leather, including the padding inside—no synthetic fillers, no compromises. The handmade custom straps are made full grain vegetable-tanned leather. These are straps made by a collector, for collectors.
You can now shop handmade leather watch straps online with confidence, knowing they’re made to last and age beautifully with use.
Unsure Which Strap to Choose for Your Vintage Watch?
Pairing the right strap with a vintage timepiece is both an art and a joy. If you're ever stuck or confused, I’d be more than happy to have a conversation. Whether it’s a dress watch, diver, or chronograph, I can help you find the strap that complements it best.
From Watch Straps to Minimalist Wallets
While exploring leather, I also learned about full grain vegetable-tanned leather in more depth. Its strength, texture, and ability to develop a unique patina over time were unmatched.
This discovery inspired me to ditch my bulky wallet and create something that felt just right—slim, durable, and elegant. That led to our line of minimalist leather wallets, handcrafted with the same premium leather we use for our straps.
